My students read! As the Media Specialist in a 6-8 urban school I set up a yearly reading challenge. This year we are using a school wide Scrabble game to focus on words - making words and reading words both. Since many of our students do not have home libraries I'd like the prizes for our competition to be books the students can keep.

Here's the game: as students read books they each draw a Scrabble tile for every book they read. When they can make a word they put that word on a posterboard sized Scrabble board for their class. Points are tallied just as a regular Scrabble game and the winning class for each grade gets a prize at the end of the school year.

Books, books, books. Students with books in their homes become better readers than those without, and the end of our contest falls right before summer vacation. By allowing the winners to choose books they can take home we are also encouraging them to read over the summer.

Not only are you impacting the winners by supplying them with books to read over the summer, you are encouraging all of my students to read and helping them see how words are put together. When the students see a cart of high interest books from which the winners choose they are encouraged to read during the school year so that their class can win the books.
