Microbiology - A Big Chance to See a Small World

My students need lab quality equipment, like pipets, agar, gloves, and bacterial cultures, to learn proper techniques in our new Microbiology elective.

My Students

Imagine trying to teach a science class with no books and no budget! That is the challenge we are facing at our high school. I introduced a new class in Microbiology, and was given approval to run it as long as it wouldn't cost our district anything.

My students are an amazing bunch of kids who have chosen to take extra science classes!

Microbiology is a new science elective we are offering and it is geared toward students who are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. It is open to all students and is being presented in a way that is appropriate for special education students as well as gifted students. I am trying to stress real-life skills and scenarios, and the students are challenged to master the material and the techniques. Our public high school often scores at the bottom of the county when it comes to standardized tests, but our kids have a real thirst for knowledge. It is amazing what you can do with small donations from the local supermarket and pharmacy. We have been using unflavored gelatin for growing our bacteria samples, and students have brought in bottles of hand sanitizer from home to stock our classroom. But to do the kinds of experiments that teach the "real" thing, we need better equipment.

My Project

In today's tough economic climate, any opportunity we can give to our students to prepare them for college or careers will be an advantage. By using live bacterial cultures and proper lab techniques, I can begin training them in the methods used in real laboratories around the world. Micropipettes and agar gels are the things you see on CSI when the detectives need to identify DNA from suspects. These techniques are also used in Microbiology to identify different strains of bacteria and viruses - bird flu or MRSA, anyone? My students will use these instruments and supplies for multiple lab activities as they master aseptic transfers, serial dilutions, petri dish preparation and much more.

I consider it my personal mission to get my students to think that science is cool!

That science is interesting! That science is relevant to their lives! I want to give my kids a chance to really "do" science. My hope is that the activities in our class will spark their interest and inspire them to further their education and study Biology at higher levels and perhaps even become scientists themselves!
