My Students

My students need books to add to our classroom library. Over the last couple of years there has been a tremendous trend towards reading "Book Series." Our young kids want to do the same. We have been exploring a variety of choices and this is one that will meet the needs of all of our students!

My students need books to add to our class library, especially books with female role models.

What better way than through amazing literature with girls and women that show strength of character, personality, and actions. My students are exceptional :) We are a 3/4/5 Multi-Age classroom. A teacher friend of mine and I were able to take down the wall between our classes and now we have a giant classroom with 70 kids of all ages, the kids stay with us for three years. We are currently in our 16th year of running this very different, very challenging, and very rewarding classroom. The kids are full of energy, enthusiasm, and excitement for learning - we encourage the students to learn in a variety of ways, to present information through project presentations. We are located in Southern California. Every year we put on an end of the year play/concert, we also share performances (poetry reads, character dress-up and act outs, expert presentations in a "passion study.")

My Project

This novel series is so exciting and fun to read. Cornelia Funke, the author, has taken the idea of books and their readers interacting in each others worlds. Cornelia Funke, the enormously talented author of the international best-seller THE THIEF LORD, brings readers another spellbinding tale of adventure and magic. Meggie lives a quiet life alone with her father, a book-binder. But her father has a deep secret-- he possesses an extraordinary magical power!!! One day a mysterious stranger arrives who seems linked to her father's past. Who is this sinister character and what does he want? Suddenly Meggie is involved in a breathless game of escape and intrigue as her father's life is put in danger. Will she be able to save him in time? That is just book one - it will grab the attention of our readers and pull them into the literary world or the final two books in the trilogy!

We have seen a shift recently in the types of books that our young readers love to read - along with noticing the shift is the responsibility to provide those types of books that the students WANT to read and that also provide wonderful literary characters and profound situations that lead to dynamic discussions.
