This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember playing in the sand at the beach as a child? Do you remember your kindergarten or pre-school sand table? My young students do not have this luxury.

My 4 and 5-year-old students live in a low-income, urban environment.

They are curious, caring and dedicated children whose life circumstances limit their exposure to many activities that students of other socioeconomic groups have access to on a daily basis.

My Project

I am requesting a sand table, sand, and sand toys for my kindergarten classroom. My students are hungry for hands-on activities that stimulate their imagination while encouraging questioning and exploration. A sand table will provide my students with hours of exposure to a medium that they have never encountered before. Many of the story books in our classroom library refer to children who take trips to the beach and the adventures that ensue. Most of my students have not been to the beach and they have never experienced the joy of running their hands through sand. Sand play incorporates many math skills including measurement and estimation, patterns and shapes and spatial relations. We will use the sand table on a daily basis during math and free play time.

Funding this project will allow a group of inquisitive and respectful students to have access to a classroom resource that will expand their imaginative powers while strengthening math skills and encouraging collaboration.
