Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Are you a reluctant reader? Is your child? The goal of this project is to use Nook e-readers in the media center to help encourage our more reluctant readers. Our goal is to load the Nooks with quality literature that appeals to this type of reader.

92% of my students are economically needy.

Over 3/4 of them come from Non-English speaking homes. My students love to read and are fascinated by exciting characters. Most do not have books at all at home, and they rarely visit the public library. School is their only exposure to quality literature.

My Project

Our student's are being brought up to be digital learners. They rely on electronics in all parts of their lives. The Nook e-reader will allow reluctant readers to read in a format that is comfortable to them and will therefore motivate them. The e-readers also give the students privacy. Reluctant readers also tend to be low readers. At the intermediate level a student may stop reading all together because they are embarrassed to be seen with a low level book. The e-reader will allow these students to read at their level without anyone else knowing what text they are reading. The Nook e-readers are a wonderful tool to motivate reluctant readers of all levels. The have the capability of defining unknown words for students which improves their comprehension level. They contain color pictures which will captivate the student's interest and imagination.

E-readers are not considered necessities, and therefore not funded by our district budget.

Having a tool like this in our media center will attract more students to the library and encourage more reading.
