Highlighting Tricky Nouns and Verbs Illuminates Our Notes

My Students

Do you remember studying a foreign language in high school and getting confused by which words were masculine and which were feminine? Which verbs were regular, and which were irregular? I've devised a system in my class to color code our notes, but we need highlighters for it to work!

My students are a wonderful group of kids attending a successful urban high school in Mississippi.

The school is 90% or more free and reduced lunch, so the kids don't have a lot of money for school supplies. As part of our beginning of the year supply list, I asked the students to bring a set of highlighters to school that we could use in class. Although the students brought their notebooks and other supplies, only about 30 of my 140 students brought their highlighters. They had too much else to buy. We currently have enough for a class set, but I am already envisioning these highlighters running out from all the notes we'll be taking! I want to get the students used the color coding system so that they'll be able to study efficiently, and write and speak the French language accurately.

My Project

When we write vocabulary notes in class (which, in a foreign language class is every day!), I have the students highlight all masculine nouns, adjectives and articles blue, feminine ones pink, regular verbs green, irregular verbs yellow, and all titles and headings in orange. This way, when they study, they have a visual clue to help them remember that "la maison" is feminine, but "l'appartement" is masculine. Learning (and remembering) genders of nouns is one of the most challenging aspects of studying French, and I want my kids to stay engaged. By using the colors, it becomes almost a game. They get to shout out "blue!" or "pink!" and if someone gets it wrong, we can explain what makes something a particular color.

I know my students are working hard to learn a new language that truly is foreign to them.

I want to help make the process easier wherever I can, and I know this system helps. I just want to be able to keep it going throughout the year. I want to be able to replace the highlighters at their desks as soon as they run out, so that all my students have the same opportunities all year long.
