My Students

Who do you call when you need tech support? My school is beginning to integrate technology into classroom learning and to teach our scholars (our students) digital-age skills. We're at the very beginning of this process and we are going to need tech support.

The scholars at my school work hard and have made many academic achievements over that last several years.

We are a public charter school serving a low-income urban area in Illinois and we have been successful at creating a strong learning community school-wide while also raising reading and math state test scores. Our middle school has been growing and this year we will have our first 8th grade graduation. Many of our scholars will be applying to selective enrollment high schools because of their hard work. Where they will not be able to compete, however, is in their knowledge and use of technology tools. We have had inadequate access to technology and limited knowledge of how to integrate technology into teaching and learning until now.

My Project

This year, my school has committed to purchasing netbooks and upgrading laptops so that teachers and scholars have access to the tools. As the tech-integration coordinator, I am leading this program and recognize the tech support need we will have in classrooms throughout the school. Meet the SCHOLAR TECH SQUAD! Twelve scholars will be taking Scholar Tech Squad as an independent study course this year. They will be trained in the use of school-wide applications and tech tools that will be utilized in classrooms. They will partner with classroom teachers at all grade levels and help plan and implement tech-integrated classroom projects. They will document their work and create multimedia presentations and portfolios to be shared school-wide. With this bank of laptops and video cameras, the scholars will be able to learn the multimedia capturing and editing skills along with being trained in the online applications that will be rolled out school-wide.

The Scholar Tech Squad will play a critical role in our school-wide mission to teach digital-age skills and technology to our scholars.

The Tech Squad will take on a leadership role among their peers and provide the support classrooms need to integrate technology into teaching and learning so that all scholars Pre-K through 8th grade are developing the technology skills and responsibilities for high school and college success.
