Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The mysterious and life-sustaining ocean is something that is very unfamiliar to our inner-city students. The crashing of waves and calls between whales are wonderful things that need to be explored. Please help our first graders to become better acquainted with the ocean and its magical creatures.
Our first grade students can be summed up in one word: amazing.
They are always positive, smiling, full of energy and have a real hunger for learning. Most of them come from low-income homes, so their experiences outside Brooklyn are limited. Despite this, they have a deep interest in beaches, oceans and anything related to these topics. Half of our class is made up up children with special needs, so hands-on learning is an essential part of our classroom. Their inquisitive minds are always asking more questions and with these materials they will learn a plethora of new information. We dedicate a whole month to reading, writing and learning about the ocean, so these supplies will support every student and every subject area.
My Project
By using the animal specific books, each student will be able to learn new facts about those animals. They will also use the books to research and study new topics with which they are unfamiliar and transfer this learning to their nonfiction writing. The hands-on animal creatures will help our students understand what each ocean animal looks like, rather than only seeing their appearance on a 2-D page. The magnifying glasses will allow our students to study their findings at our yearly trip to the beach. Since our students learn through every sense, the ocean CDs will allow them to hear the actual animal sounds and better understand how they communicate and live with each other. In addition, the puppets will be greatly enjoyed as our students act out the accompanying book and have fun with each ocean animal. Each and every resource on our Wish List will be used throughout the whole year by all students and will enhance the learning of our entire class tremendously.
Donations to our class are extremely important because our school has limited money to buy extra supplies for projects.
As teachers, we try our best to make use of what we have and often use our own money to buy things that our students need. If a resource will make a permanent mark on a child's memory and enhance their overall learning, then it is worth every penny. We would be so very appreciative if our project is funded and so would the students in our class for years to come.
