Science & History Are So Much Better On The Big Screen!

My students need a projector to help education come alive!

My Students

Do you remember how boring history was growing up? How confusing science was without "Bill Nye the Science Guy?"

I teach in inner-city California and my students are at the forefront of social change as they fight to close the achievement gap in our nation.

Our students are 99% African American, and over 50% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our charter middle school is developing our students with the tools to be successful not only in high school but to attend and succeed in college. Given our means as a school they do not receive the same allocations, specifically to technology and books as other schools in the state. With recent budget cuts, teachers have had restroom breaks eliminated (illegal but true), so you can imagine our supply list. Our students are incredibly energetic and have an undying want to learn. They understand what it is to be a life long learner. Science excites them and history gets them constantly thinking and analyzing. They understand the challenges that lie ahead of them and they see education as a means of power and responsibility for their future.

My Project

The projector will be used everyday in our class. In science technology is seen everyday. However, some of the things that we learn in my lessons and in our books I am unable to show a more clear visual picture, power point, or video clip in order to accelerate their learner or simply using different means for visual learners. Some of my students are currently without textbooks. As if my students didn't already think history was boring (a mindset I fight to change everyday with them) they are unable to even read about a time period for themselves or look at pictures in order to visualize what an event in history was like. It is becoming more and more important to use video clips, the Internet, and power points in order to stimulate their minds. Instead, of printing out pictures and literature everyday for my students (a feat in itself because of our frequently broken copy machine and lack of copy paper) it would be incredibly helpful to simply project it to the board.

The first week of school, I shared a quote with students from Cesar Chavez: "Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed.

You cannot uneducate the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore. We have seen the future, and the future is ours." In having a projector available everyday for my students I believe that it will stimulate their learning as the continue in their journey of education.
