My Students

Today's economy is having an effect on everyone and my Consumer Education students are no different! Basic sewing and consumer product evaluation skills, and the pride of accomplishment are the goals I have set for them.

The students in my class are at a great economic disadvantage because of our rural setting and the current economy.

Employment for their parents is hard to come by. Funding of elective programs like mine are happening everywhere because the State of Maine continues to cut funding for Schools. Half of the students in my class this year are enrolled in special needs programs and all but 2 qualify for free or reduced school meals.

My Project

Wouldn't it be nice for these students to learn shopping and sewing skills that will save them money, provide relaxation, and make them feel better about themselves? I sure think so! My students will learn the specifics of pattern lay-out, pinning and construction methods using the sewing machine. They will also learn fabric care, garment evaluation techniques, and a variety of embellishment methods as they complete their projects.

The students involved in this project will be empowered to make good decisions about their fashion and purchasing choices for a lifetime and they will have pride in what they have accomplished.

The skills they learn from this project will make a real difference for these students, not just now, but into the future as well! Thank you!
