My Students

Today's middle school students are tech savvy, and I try my best to offer them instruction which feels natural to them. I am lucky in that I, too, enjoy technology.

Like most students their age, you will see them texting on cell phones and listening to iPods.

This "universal" communication permeates our rural middle school of approximately 850 students. My 100 seventh graders, while of varying academic abilities and life experiences, all seem to enjoy the technology that I use in the classroom.

My Project

The school has provided a smartboard, projector and document camera. The additional tech tools used by my students have been provided with personal funds. I have always maintained that if I could, I would gladly support my classroom financially, and like most teachers I know, I have indeed done that over the 33 years of my career. Currently, I have personally purchased two printers, seven blue-tooth tablets, and 32 radio frequency student response "clickers." These purchases were not inexpensive but were well worth the financial sacrifice on my part. Now, in order for students to use them daily, batteries must be fresh. This is where I am asking for assistance from donors.

Each clicker uses two batteries, and each graphic tablet uses two batteries.

The pen for the graphic tablet uses one battery. You can see that 100 students using these materials four hours a day will require frequent battery replacement. Without this replacement, the tools become unusable. I thank you in advance for your assistance in helping me to maintain a classroom that is engaging and meaningful to students.
