Helping Nonverbal Students Communicate

My Students

Communication is a basic human right. By using an iPod touch, my students will be better able to express their wants and needs to peers and adults. They will be able to access programs that enable them to participate more fully in the classroom and thus, enhance their learning.

As a speech-language pathologist, I serve approximately 80 students within the school.

About 1/2 of these students are nonverbal or have limited verbal skills. Due to budget cuts and being a school in a metropolitan district, funds are difficult to come by for communication devices such as this iPod touch.

My Project

An iPod touch that will eventually be loaded with Proloquo2Go will give children a way to immediately communicate with peers and adults to better participate in their academic environment. My students will be able to make their voices and opinions heard while learning.

I truly believe that this device will open doors for these children who may otherwise not be able to interact with peers and adults.

All children should be given the tools they need to communicate and I believe this is a small step towards doing that for the children that I serve.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
