My Students

"I worked for two weeks on that PowerPoint ... and it's gone!" This is a quote I've heard one too many times in my classroom. There is nothing more frustrating than losing something you put your hard work into! With a flash drive assigned to each student, this can be prevented.

I teach at a Title 1 school in North Carolina.

My students come from a low socio-economic area and many are facing high poverty levels. They come from diverse backgrounds, and many are non-English speakers. My students are motivated and enjoy learning. They enjoy being challenged, and they look forward to coming to school each day.

My Project

My students need 25 flash drives in order to save their work and data as they move from home to school, and to different computers within the school. I would say that 95 percent of my students have never used a flash drive, or perhaps have never seen or heard of one. Yet, they face the same problems adults do when it comes to creating work and needing to save it. Having their own flash drive will enable students to save their work when traveling from computer to computer within the school, or when they want to take it home and work on it. It will provide their own space where they can store all of their projects. It will also be a tool for storing their data (academic goals, and how well they are doing in each subject) as Excel documents, which can then be turned into graphs. Our world is becoming so technologically savvy, and my students will be able to access more of the experiences they need by using a flash drive of their own.

My students will benefit from this project because it will introduce them to a tool that is considered basic in the adult world.

It will help them to understand technology a little more, as well as serve as a building block for further interest in technology. It will also resolve a lot of their frustrations with technology, since they view losing their work a chance they have to take. With a flash drive, in addition to a well-organized routine for their use, there will be no chances.
