This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Jacqueline Kennedy once stated, "There are many little ways to enlarge a child's world. Love of books is the best of all." This is exactly what I want to do -- enhance the quality of my students' lives by promoting reading for enjoyment.

I teach Freshman English in a high-poverty community in Illinois.

My students mean the world to me. I go to work everyday with a smile on my face because I love what I do; I help teenagers, most of whom are struggling readers, become better readers, writers, and thinkers.

My Project

I would love 100 texts of Sharon M. Draper's "Romiette and Julio" for my students to read in conjunction with William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet." The text is based on the famous play, but it is more modern and will definitely engage struggling readers. Because "Romeo and Juliet" is a difficult play to read, my struggling readers sometimes give up on it. I truly believe I will be able to increase their confidence as readers if I have a high-interest text that is at their reading level to compare the play to.

My students will benefit greatly from reading "Romiette and Julio." They will be engaged in a text at their appropriate reading level, and they will be able to better understand William Shakespeare's original version of "Romeo and Juliet." I have no doubt in my mind that these texts will help me to achieve my ultimate goal: increase my students confidence as readers and willingness to read for enjoyment!
