This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember your teacher giving you a random topic you had no personal connection to, or prior knowledge about, and telling you to write a full page on that topic as "creative writing"? I do, and to be honest, it wasn't creative nor was it true writing. True writing cannot be prescribed.

My third grade, gifted and talented students have a voice and an imagination that they are dying to get on paper, but feel constricted when they are told what to write about.

Children write best about what they know, what they've experienced, what they're interested in.

My Project

This is why my school leader has decided to implement a fascinating writing program called 6+1 Writing Traits. My students need reproducible materials and lesson essentials for the integration of this writing program. This program trains teachers, and trains students, to organize their writing into six categories: ideas, organization, voice, sentence fluency, word choice and conventions. Once students become experts in organizing their writing in these categories, their writing is ready for publishing. The end result is authentic children's work.

Being an inner city school in New York, we are feeling the budget cuts in a huge way this year.

Launching this program in my class will be a great relief. You can help my students become organized, authentic authors by purchasing curriculum, reproducible materials, and learning charts that will aid with the launch of the 6+1 Writing Traits Program.
