Projecting Into The Future

My Students

We work on complex projects like animation and graphic design. Walking students through the process in order to allow them to be creative would be so much simpler if I could show them the steps involved. I now go around the room and repeat simple steps such as saving protocol.

I have students from all over the world.

Many of my students do not speak English as a first language. Having an opportunity to work with them one-on-one is wonderful, but the best instruction comes when they understand the steps that are required and are asking about how to be creative. My students create animations using free software, telling their stories. Their stories range from learning English from another student who speaks a different language, to the general grind of Middle School life, to how they stand up to bullies. My kids are technologically savvy but have holes in their knowledge. Speed keys are revolutionary to them, as are some basic concepts of cyber safety. We go over all these things in my class. Stressing 21st century skills, and creative project work, my students make huge strides in their language acquisition as well as their technology skills.

My Project

The picture of our lab I have in my profile was taken last year. My students are all standing up. You can't see some of them in the back. I have mirrors around the room, but if they want to see my instruction some of my youngest students have had to move around the room. This is fine, I run a creative and collaborative class. However, I would love to be able to really model my process, not just show them the end product. Our class Web site, www.halseybulldog.org, features some of my student's work as well as information on the projects we are working on. The picture in my profile was from National Poetry Month's Poem in Your Pocket day. We decided to change it around some and I purchased clown noses so that my students would have Poem in Your Nose day. They researched and selected poems to fit into their clown noses. Later the experience became one student's animated film. Using computers as creative tools in a collaborative environment would benefit greatly from an LCD projector.

Computers are creative tools.

Watching a person demonstrate the creative process will inspire my students to look beyond their insecurity and reach out and try to be creative. I am not an artist and when I draw on the board my students see that I'm like them... trying to show an idea through an image. If they can see that for all that I do, they will better understand the steps and the procedures they need to become creative 21st century citizens.
