My Students

Ever share the feeling of being uninspired when your teacher asked you to write? In second grade one of the fastest and easiest ways to motivate a writer is to fancifully publish his/her work in eye catching colors and share it with a captive audience. I'd like to do this for my students each year.

My students are very deserving, under-privileged, second grade learners with powerful imaginations for seven year-olds.

They enjoy telling me the stories of their lives and trust me with their most sacred feelings. "My cat ran away and never came back," one says. Another writes, "The cops took my dog because it was sick. She had spots on her back." When asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" one scratched in a notebook, "Someday I want to be a teacher." We spend six hours of every school day in a small brick building which is nestled in one of several low-income housing areas in our town. We love it here. It's our safe place. It's where we learn to question, how to solve problems, and to dream big without anyone telling us we can't or we shouldn't. It's the smallest school with the biggest heart! Hung in every classroom are homemade signs saying, "This is important! You can do it! And I won't give up on you!"

My Project

Writing is one of those subjects that most of my students either love or love to hate. I have had some success with motivating them in the past by typing up their stories in Microsoft Word and printing them out, but I always sense a hint of disappointment when they see their illustrations come out in black and white. "Can we print this in color? How come we can't print this in color?" "That would be so awesome if this was printed in color!" A color printer and color ink cartridges would entice my students to draft, revise, edit, and apply their writing skills to more pieces allowing them to become appreciative "published authors" this coming year and for years to come. With photo paper I could take their pictures and add an "About the Author" page to their stories. My writers would be more engaged and increasingly motivated, thus student achievement would increase. My teaching would be enhanced by these gifts too! With them I'd wouldn't have to just make do anymore.

My students have wonderful stories just surfing around in their heads.

You have the power to unlock their stories, capture them forever, and illuminate their minds. The uses of the gifts I'm requesting are limitless, bound only by our imaginations and we'd all greatly appreciate them so much each and every day, year after year!
