My Students

Even first graders are intrigued by using technology. From cell phones to gaming systems there are so many ways to waste our time with technology. I want to teach my students to embrace technology as a means to explore the world around them.

Our school is located in a low-income area in Mississippi.

Most of my students receive free or reduced lunches. Despite the economic status, they do have limited access to technology at home. Parents have cell phones and computers at home, but often do not allow their children to handle the technology. My students currently utilize technology at school in the form of computers.

My Project

With 4 iPods, my students won't have to share my single iPod during center time. It is very difficult to allow one child to be the "camera-person" while they video a dramatic re-enactment of a story they've read or detail their detective adventure searching for words to read around the room. We have also taken the iPod outside and allowed student reporters/narrators to tell about the playground, school grounds, or nature while recording their accounts. Sometimes, I have a listening activity or an audio book available for them to listen to, but only one student can hear at a time. We have also recorded ourselves reading into the voice recorder app which allows me to listen to the children read in an exclusive, more private session that allows me to provide a customized plan of action to help the child read fluently and differentiateS instruction to all children. Four additional iPods would allow all of the students to utilize fun new ways to use technology. Endless Possibilities!

With so many teenagers using technology to simply play games or music and watch YouTube videos these days, it would be great if a teacher or a parent would show them educational ways of using the technology.

If we start with first graders, oh the places they will go!
