My Students

Often my students would like to print out their completed projects to include in their portfolios but due to our limited funds we have to be conscientious about what we print in order to conserve our ink.

Our 7-12 school is located in rural Mississippi and we have approximately 330 students.

My students are 9th through 12th graders and like most teenagers they love computers and technology. Outside of school and the public library most do not have access to computers or exposure to various software programs. Currently our school provides students the opportunity to take classes such as Information Processing, Desktop Publishing, Entrepreneurship, Personal Finance, Web Page Design, and Digital Media Design. The students take great pride in the products they create in the computer lab. Students who take these classes are exposed to the latest technology and software trends. They graduate prepared for college and are encouraged to explore non-traditional career fields that are growing in demand.

My Project

Most of the projects my students complete are computer based. After completing the projects students often want to print them to include in their portfolios or even to display them around the school. When students see their work displayed in the lab or in the halls they are proud. Sometimes they are even encouraged to work harder and do a better job because they want their peers to see their best work. When students are able to print their completed projects and put them on display their self-esteem and self-confidence is boosted, and they gain a sense of accomplishment.

Most of the students who attend our school come from low-income families; over 75% of our students received free or reduced lunch.

Ink for the printers in our computer lab is very expensive so I often have to assess a lab fee for those who take my class. Most of my students nor their parents can afford to pay lab fees. Donations to this request will help to ensure my lab will have ink for our printers and will not discourage students who can not afford to pay the lab fee from taking the class.
