My Students

"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." --Benjamin Franklin. These words guide me each day as I enter my classroom. Teaching in a school with predominately lower socio-economic students makes these words even more powerful.

My students are a beautifully diverse group of eager learners from Florida.

Many of them face tremendous challenges in their home lives and revere school as a safe harbor. They come from varied ethnic backgrounds and make each day colorful in all the right ways. A smile and a little patience go along way with these students. In many ways you have to be creative and entertaining to hold their attention. They often have a lot, besides school, on their young minds.

My Project

I have had tremendous academic successes using literature with students. By participating in literature circles, whole group book studies, and many varied creative activities involving the literature I have seen the least likely students become New York Times quality reviewers. Children possess the creativity to see the unseen, the innocence to spot every injustice, and wonder to make each moment precious. I only wish everyone could see a child with a book in their hand discussing themes, literary devices used by authors, metaphors and so much more. They blow my mind each year and it's never the same. I am hoping this donation will expand my classroom library to include more diverse literature that is capable of allowing me to have books on hand that will engage even the most timid of readers.

Class sets of literature allow me to guide my students through the reading process.

To demonstrate to them, in the safety of my learning environment, that they can each delve into literature successfully. I can show them that every comment, wondering, and idea they have are valid and insightful. They gain much needed confidence as readers and carry this forward as the challenges of their academic lives become greater. Reading is gift that keeps on giving.
