My Students

Graphic novels are book's future. In a world that is more and more about instant gratification and less and less about imagination- these books will help me reach out to reluctant readers and teach them the value of a novel.

My students are from the lower socio-economic side of a fairly affluent county.

Most have gone through some rough times, and precious few have ever turned to a novel for inspiration or escape. Most turn to either television, video games, you tube or, sad to say, illegal activities. With this said, they are not "bad" people, they just have not had the opportunity to experience the elation of losing yourself in a novel. I wholeheartedly believe that graphic novels are the means in which to teach them this. The meshing of pictures and words takes talent to read! But the hard work pays off and novels are somehow relevant. Plot lines are discussed, vocabulary is learned, chapters are enjoyed! And best of all, my students no longer despise the content of their English class! It's amazing how after reading one graphic novel with them, they trust you enough to believe that you truly do have their best interest at heart, and then they are more willing to read a regular novel.

My Project

I am requesting two sets of graphic novels- the first is titled THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES- an enticing Sherlock Holmes story that many of my students lose interest in simply because of the Victorian style of Conan Doyle's writing. During the Victorian age, description was everything. His vast amount of words hinder my students ability to get much from the novel. Not to mention a picture of a big, scary, demonic hound may make a bigger impression. Pictures are worth 1000 words! The next set I requested is titled, NEVERMORE and is a fantastic mix of artists illustrating Edgar Allen Poe short stories. Again, while he is enticing and a great author to teach due to his suspenseful and deep plot lines, many times the students get lost in the language of the 1800s. It happens! Here, they understand the story, can discuss the elements of the plot AND they gain the joy of reading. I think those who have not had the opportunity to love to read have really missed out in life!

Reading is a skill one HAS to have in this country and to become a critical reader is big step towards a better future.

Please help me help my students. I really believe a love of reading starts with the best medium for the class. Graphic novels are on the rise, learning how to read them and appreciate them will definitely assist my English students. Thank you for your time.
