Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever noticed that many adults struggle with math? Math is such a complex subject. It seems like people either "get it" or they "don't". As a teacher, I NEVER want my students to fall into that category! In my classroom, my wish is that EVERY child loves math as much as I always did.

My students are 4th graders who are learning English as their second language.

They come from poverty and have many challenges in their lives. We are an inner-city struggling school. Despite the many obstacles in their lives, my students are SO happy to be in school, and SO excited to learn! They are polite, smart, and enthusiastic about all their topics! Math, especially, is a captivating time for them each day. They enjoy using math manipulatives, keeping a math binder, and writing about math!

My Project

The activities I chose will be PERFECT for their age, our topics, and their interests! I chose several place value manipulatives because place value is the fundamental skill for our WHOLE 4th grade year. Once they learn place value, all other math topics make sense. I also chose decimal flipcharts so they can manipulate the differences between the whole number side and the decimal side. Children always learn better when they can manipulate something. Real-World Math Problem Solving Kits will be the perfect, perfect way to show the connection of math in the classroom and the world around them (the mall, shopping, sports, travel, etc.)Hands-on Place Value Cubes will show how different numbers mean different things depending on their location. Student Equivalency Flipboards will be the PERFECT manipulative to show connections between fractions, percent, and decimals. These materials look WONDERFUL!

Math education has changed so much and continues to change EACH day in our world.

More than ever, children are being called on to delve deeper into math, to understand its importance to the world around them. These materials are so beautifully created just for children. If a child has these materials in his/her hands, he/she will SURELY learn. That is something to celebrate!Thank you so much for taking the time to consider this proposal. We appreciate it so much.
