My Students

At our school we pay for good behavior and good work! We use a Positive Behavioral Support program to reward students. During the week, students are rewarded with special School “Bucks” for keeping up with school & homework, wearing a complete uniform, being helpful & exhibiting appropriate behavior.

We are a Charter School that was created to meet the educational needs of students following the catastrophe that befell Louisiana in the fall of 2005.

We serve grades Pre-Kindergarten through eight and have several Special Education classes. Most (99%) of our students are eligible for free or reduced lunches. Our students are truly extraordinary and have done more than merely survive the trauma of the storm, they have thrived. Through hard work and diligence, they have overcome incredible obstacles. They have had the highest over-all standardized test scores in the district, and the second highest in the city.

My Project

Every other Friday, the students can come to the PBS store and spend their school bucks. They especially like being able to buy snacks. Being able to offer edible treats makes the PBS store THE place to be. These treats will be a perfect addition to the usual school supplies offered in the store. The program is extremely successful because the students are rewarded rather quickly for their efforts. The store is open during the school day and the students come during their free time and return to the classroom with all of their loot. This has inspired other students, who perhaps are slacking a little, to improve so they, too, can get bucks to spend at the store.

This program is very successful, but, unfortunately, is unfunded.

Teachers themselves have made donations to the store and we have had a small fundraiser. We want to keep the store stocked with items that inspire the students to earn bucks, but are having difficulty doing it. These treats will allow the store to remain open.
