This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Creating a love of writing lasts a lifetime. I have the most rewarding job of teaching kids to love to write. As a primary teacher, I instill in them the power of the pen and how important it is to become strong confident writers...to use their imaginations and express themselves through writing.

This year I have a group of 20 amazing 2nd graders.

The school is Pre-Kindergarten to third grade and has a population of around 750. The students are 99% Hispanic and come from low-income homes. My students love being in school, and each day provides a new experience for them to grow as learners. They are not exposed to many educational opportunities outside of the classroom and so it is important for me to provide them with every tool possible to enrich their learning experience.

My Project

My student's personalities shine and I want to be able to provide them with all the necessary tools to have them become successful readers and writers. These supplies will give them the tools to become strong confident writers. My students love writing books. Each day we take time to write during writer's workshop. They love getting their ideas on paper and seeing how their ideas can turn into a story that they are proud of. I want to provide an area for my students to publish their books. The binding machine will allow them to create a book that they can take home and treasure. In order to manage their writing, folders and a chart will allow me to see what stage they are in as we work through the writing process. Many of my students love to find a quiet place in the classroom to write, and the clipboards will allow them to work away from their usual tables. For the struggling writers, the flip charts will provide them a chance to explore ideas of topics to write about.

I want to provide as many resources as possible to allow my students to expand on their writing.

The supplies will create an excitement amongst my students as they work on their stories. It will give them a sense of pride and accomplishment as they are able to turn their writing into published books that they can share with others. This project will not only affect those students who are in my classroom this year, but for many years to come.
