Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are moving into genre study in our independent reading. Unfortunately, with budget cuts abounding, there is no funding for the books that we need. We would like to do a mystery unit using such titles as the Nancy Drew notebook series, Two-Minute Mysteries series, and Dollhouse Murder.

My students are amazing readers.

Despite the fact that our school is in the South Bronx, ground zero for childhood poverty, my students continue to excel at reading based on our commitment to independent reading strategies. My students have grown so much this year -- from students reading below grade level -- to students who are now reading at or above grade level.

My Project

We keep working on comprehension strategies in our independent reading. We are looking to work in the study of different genres of literature. The more we can study reading and literature, the more my students will grow as readers. We are trying to bridge the gap in urban education by providing all of the resources that students will need to ensure that they develop literary lives.

It is only with the support of kind and generous benefactors that we can really start to bridge the gap between our public funding and what we actually need in the classroom.

Thank you for your support of education and for considering this proposal. God bless.
