My Students

The process of writing is so hard to define and understand. For some students it seems invisible and they experience frustration that they can't do it. In order to succeed in college and professional life, they must be proficient writers and able to self-edit and self-reflect on their work.

I teach amazing artistic students who thrive with hands-on, experiential learning.

They understand how to shade an image or play a scale to learn a song. They learned by practicing and having experts model for them. I want to harness this artistic learning process to teach reading and writing in my English classroom.

My Project

I'm requesting a document camera to hook up to our LCD projector (and a cart to hold them both). This will help us illuminate the process of writing. Students will be able to see me and their peers writing, editing, and revising works in person using the document camera. This will demystify the process of writing and help students learn it the way they learn their art! We can even take video or snapshots of the process to upload to our class website so students can revisit them and continue to learn at home. This tool is much better than an overhead projector because it cuts out the step of copying everything for the overhead onto transparency and having to write with unwieldy markers. Students can walk right up with their writing (or a mentor text) and put it on the tablet - it will be projected on the board. It will make mini-lessons easy to execute and make every child a model in the class.

Creating college-ready writers and thinkers is my top priority.

This tool will help make the writing process visible and clear to my students so they can improve their writing and prepare for college and professional writing tasks. Please help my class by providing this wonderful tool!
