Project GIVE - Gaining Insights with Volunteer Experiences My class of students with special needs conduct service projects each year. This year our service will be to communicate with a child with selective mutism. This is a rare condition that affects school age children who are typically developing in all other ways, but have anxiety about speaking in school. My students will communicate with the student using a card reader and the student will respond using the card reader - but will do so in the comfortable home environment.

My students have contact with a student who is having difficulty in the school setting and will not speak to teachers, peers, or relatives at school. We feel if we learn more about his condition we will have more opportunities to help others understand how to relate to a student with selective mutism. We tried using a tape player but because of the amount of tape it is difficult to respond with one word answers. The card reader will allow the student with selective mutism to respond with one word answers to questions asked by his peers at home using his voice. The reason we are encourage voice is because the child has been trying to communicate in school with gestures and writing, but at this time I feel it is in his best interest to encourage a minimal amount of voice responses from the child. An example of how this would be used is one student would ask the child what about a favorite TV show and the child would respond using the card recorder.

My students are usually the recipients of good will, through Project GIVE they will give back to our school community by providing information and insight into the rare condition of selective mutism. We need the tape reader, microphone and cards to provide the student with selective mutism a comfortable way to begin voicing his responses.
