Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This grant is going to fund the technology behind real-world business planning and Capstone projects for the Marketing and Entrepreneurship students in a low income inner-city comprehensive high school with high acheivement gaps in both black-white and hispanic-white categories. The students in my business and technology classes range from 9-12 graders. There are a large number of English Language Learners(ELL) and special education students in my Computer Literacy class who would benefit from smaller group settings that could be focused around the laptop.

The students in my Computer Literacy class are not able to fully see the benefits of Web 2.0 in the classroom and since many of the students do not have access to computers at home they are missing out on vast resources of free information and software that is available using the internet. Also, my English Language Learners are not able to get the full benefit of PowerPoint lessons because they struggle with understanding the written and verbal English that they see and hear. Finally, my Marketing and Entrepreneurship students have business plans and Capstone projects to complete that would be greatly enhanced by the presence of a laptop to help them prepare their presentations.

The student body population is largely made up of Hispanics and African Americans. There are a large number of students who are English language learners and would greatly benefit from Spanish PowerPoint presentations. The problem is that currently I do not have the equipment to show the English PowerPoint and a Spanish PowerPoint at the same time. As a result, the Spanish speaking students lose out on the opportunity to see and hear the presentation in English while reading the content in their native language. The Entrepreneurship students are required to complete an entire business plan and having a laptop would allow for the students to practice their presentations and finalize their drafts much easier than currently done. The Marketing students would benefit from this because this is the first year they are being required to complete a cumulative Capstone project for the end of the year and the students would have another machine to work on and practice their presentations with. Finally, my Computer Literacy students would be aided significantly by this laptop by being able to see different software options that currently can not run on the few PC's that we have.

Your help will enable my students to learn about business and computer technology with up-to-date equipment, while further enhancing the education for these students who are the future business leaders.
