Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Dear Gift Giver, Our kids are phenomenal! They have so much promise and potential. Everyday our investment in them is paying great dividends and they are making dramatic intellectual gains. The problem is that we never have enough interesting books for them! We don't have a school library yet and we really need more books to keep our students on the long and winding journey to success. We are located in ground-zero for childhood poverty. Our students' and their families cannot afford to buy books during great economic times. In these difficult economic times, things are much worse and our school budget has been cut 7 times in the last three years. Our good books are starting to dwindle. This is why I have written this grant to you. We desperately need your help to get these engaging books and help our amazing students progress to higher reading levels. We use the Reader's Workshop model from Columbia Teacher's College. What that means is that each student is expected to read a book at his or her reading level. To accomplish this task we must at all times have a variety of interesting books at a number of reading levels. The books I have carefully chosen for this grant would help our classroom library to meet these goals. These books would utilized immediately by students to improve their reading comprehension. We teach strategies for how to think deeper about a text you are reading. These strategies are profoundly effective if the book is right for you. These books will be right for many of our kids. They will be intensively used from the day they are received at our school for an hour a day of independent reading. Many students will also read the books every night at home for multiple hours. Our students have been begging me to get them great on-level books to read. The books I have selected for this grant are illustrated classics such as "Dracula" by Bram Stoker and "Tom Sawyer" by Mark J. Twain. These books involve characters who undertake great adventures and hold many life-lessons for our students. I have also requested copies of the Epic series "Bone" by Jeff Smith. This series is incredibly popular with our students and involves a character who is exiled and constantly tries to make his way home. This story is a modern retelling of "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey" and is great for our students. Please help us provide our students with the powerful ideas in these inspiring books! I have bought numerous books on my own but a teacher's salary doesn't give enough room for the kind of philanthropy that our kids desperately need. Please help us by providing these essential resources for our awesome students! We thank your for your integral support for our cause. The growth of our students is the growth of our world.
