Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a Literature to Film class at a high-needs public middle school in New York. My four 8th-grade classes range from honors students to at-risk students with learning disabilities in a special education classroom.

The Department of Education and the NY Film Academy have developed a summer short film festival, and after watching a few sample films from previous applicants my students have expressed an interest in writing and filming their own short films. However, my students need more examples of professional films to analyze and emulate.

My students need a broad collection of films and short stories that focus on young adult life across the globe and the tough choices they must face. This project would provide my students with a wide range of films that address coming-of-age in different countries and cultures around the world. In addition, these films would be supplemented by various collections of short stories about young adults and tough choices. Together, these resources would provide thematic and structural examples that my students can use to develop their own narratives.

Your generous donations will allow me to develop a curriculum that can be implemented in other classes in the school and in future school years. More important, you will provide a foundation upon which my students can tell their own narrative. Thank you.
