My students are all first graders who are found to be the weakest readers and writers among their peers. I serve these students in a pull-out reading program on a one-on-one basis to help them catch up with their counterparts.

With approximately 90% of our students coming from low income families, supplies are limited when parents don't have the time to help with schoolwork. Paper and pencil activities do not provide the needed tactile and kinesthetic activities these children need in order to internalize basic letter to word relationships.

When using manipulatives at school such as magnetic letters, I have observed my students' focus maintained as well as their ability to comprehend basic sequential and letter to sound relationships more clearly with the use of manipulatives such as the ones requested.

With your help in purchasing these materials, my students will have more opportunities to practice at home the vital skills they are struggling to learn in school. The link created by these materials will allow more students to be more successful in school and receive the foundation needed to become lifelong readers and writers. Also the added benefit of younger siblings within the home gaining understanding at an earlier age of basic letters and high frequency words. This will add to their starting school better prepared for a successful school experience.
