I teach in a rural middle school with a population of at least 500 students. The student population is from various ethnic backgrounds, moderate retention rate, single family homes, low income, and is mostly a farming community. A large number of the students receive free or reduced lunch. I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade health and physical education. The average class size is 35 students. This year is the first time we have separate sex classes and I am teaching all females. Students have physical education two or three times a week (depending on if it is an "A" day or "B" day week) for 45 minutes each class.

Teaching large physical education classes and including all the students in the days activity can be very difficult. With this being the first time teaching all female classes I wanted to approach the class units differently that in the past and have more individual, life long activities included. Physical education equipment is expensive and my program is underfunded. With the stress of required state testing, classroom learning, family and social stress I thought it may be beneficial to teach yoga in hopes of giving them an outlet to relax, recharge, and cope. Yoga is also a life-long activity that will be beneficial to them as they grow older. It will help maintain flexibility which in turn will reduce injuries and keep them physically fit.

In order for my program to get off the ground and take off I will need exercise mats for each student. My classes take place in the gym on a hardwood basketball floor. The students will be more likely to participate on a surface that is soft. Having a mat for each student will enable each student to participate to their fullest ability.

You will make it possible for every student to be involved in a physical education class that will be truly beneficial to their physical health as well as mental health. They will be able to learn skills that will benefit them for the rest of their life as well as keep them physically active. You will also help break the stigma that physical education is basketballs and dodge balls. This is every physical education teachers dream!! By helping my class "breath in, breath out, and relax" you will be helping today's youth have healthier tomorrows.
