I currently teach high school science in a small school in South Carolina. The courses that I am teaching this year include Biology, Environmental Science, and Anatomy and Physiology. Ours is a rural school located in a small community. Many of our students receive free or reduced lunch. There is little industry in our town and therefore very little income. Many of my students, if required to read a book, would not get it done for the simple fact that they could not afford to go out and buy the book. I would most definitely consider our community high-need.

I am looking to increase the literacy of my students. The only way to make this happen is to get them to read, and read on a daily basis. In order to make this possible, I must have copies of books for each of my students. However, due to lack of funds, our school is unable to purchase the books that I would like for my students to read. My anatomy and physiology students all want to be doctors of some sort and "Complications" is an amazing book that I feel they should read. Also, "Body of Work" will prepare them for the reality of medical school and "Brain Rules" will help reinforce the power of the human mind when we study the nervous system. My Biology students can learn so much by reading Bill Bryson's Book "A Short History of Nearly Everything" since this book basically outlines everything we will cover in the class.

In order to get students to read more, I must have books that would hold their interest. I think that by having these books in my classroom, I would be able to let the students read for an allotted amount of time each day and write about their readings in a journal at the beginning of each day.

With your help, we can improve one of the most important skills involved in the educational process, literacy. Most students are not exposed to literature in classes other than in literature classes, this would be a way in which to get students to read in a science classroom and better understand some of the topics that we discuss in class. I think that this will truly be an enjoyable experience for my students and I know that they would like these books once they got into them.
