My preschool special education classroom consists of three and four year old children with a wide variety of abilities and disabilities. I have children on the entire spectrum of autism disorder, some who are severely involved and non-verbal, and others who are very high functioning with Asperger's Syndrome. We also have students with cerebral palsy; mental retardation; and other non-specific, severe developmental delays in our class. To be able to help our students, we have to develop individual behavior modification/reinforcement systems which they find rewarding, and we feel positively reinforce behaviors while being educational, practical, and consistent. Two Ipod Touches would give my assistant and I the ability to provide our students with immediate personalized behavior reinforcement. By allowing our children to choose personal reinforcers such as songs and games after completing a non-preferred classroom task, everyone wins. The teachers get the desired behavior, and the child gets to play their desired activity on an Ipod Touch. As their abilities increase and they mature, the children can choose from more sophisticated activities such as puzzles, letter recognition games, sequencing tasks, fine motor games where they trace letters and shapes, and more games than can possibly be listed. There is no limit to the applications we can access. Additionally, and of great importance, we have found that parents prefer this form of behavior modification/reinforcement system for many reasons: they do not like us using food as a reward, they understand that the portability of having the Ipod Touch right with their child allows for increasing the consistency of the reinforcement yielding faster learning, it looks more appropriate when used throughout the campus, and very simply they like using advanced technology to teach kids. Of course, they can see for themselves how fun it is for their kids, and how easy it is for the children to learn. The Ipod Touch has another exciting use for us in the classroom - expanding the children's language abilities. With the Ipod Touch we can bring in a variety of videos we access through YouTube which show the children sign language, songs, and age appropriate stories. We are not allowed to access YouTube at school, but we can download the desired songs at home onto the Ipod Touch, and connect it to our television sets, allowing everyone to be able to be engaged and enjoy! The behaviorists who come to our class from outside are already equipped with the Ipod Touches. We have seen the Ipods work very well with our young children, but we are not provide this type of technology for our students. As educators, we see the Ipod Touch as a versatile tool with endless possibilities. It's a convenient way to reinforce behaviors using a portable device that can be utilized anywhere without stigmatizing our children with special needs. It allows us to bring more learning experiences into the classroom. With the donation of two 8GB Ipod Touches to my classroom, my assistant and I will each have a powerful individualized positive behavior reinforcement tool in the palm of our hands and at the ready to provide the support our students need at this early stage of their development. In conclusion, I would like to have two 8GB Ipod Touches donated to my classroom so that we can use advanced technology to help our special needs children attain their highest level of ability by utilizing technology to overcome disabilities.
