Nonfiction kids LOVE

My students need non-fiction books that they will actually want to pick up.

Mrs. Cooper Maria Carrillo High School
Santa Rosa, CA Grades 9-12

Wouldn't it be great if students had true stories to inspire them that were actually enjoyable? That is my quest with my academic and support sophomores. Out of the ninety sophomores I have this year, only five said they considered themselves to be readers. It is my hope to encourage my students to start finding reading enjoyable so that they will continue to read long after they have left my classroom.

All but one of the novels we teach at my school are fictional. It is my hope to introduce students to the genre of non-fiction; showing them intriguing, fun, interesting books about events that really happened.

The ten non-fictional books that I am requesting are listed among the 2009 Best Books of the Year by YALSA (the Young Adult Library Services Association). They are a mix of books written about teens and adults, both from the United States and other cultures. There are even some great books among this list with pictures and personal testaments from teens across the country.

Your donation will make it possible for my students to have the resources available to begin their love of non-fiction.
