We have been listening to the audiobook as we read and pausing to add evidence to the class Murder Board, talk about theories, and debate who might be our culprit. I love hearing their opinions form and seeing how they're pulling evidence to support their assertions about who is the best and the worst.\r\n\r\nFrom here, we'll start a Character Profile where they will have to use evidence to make further inferences about their chosen character (what is their favorite food? morning routine? education?) and ultimately indict them for either their initial crime (as outlined in the \"Swan Song\" accusation) or for orchestrating the events on the island as U.N. Owen. We're leaning heavily into what's provable and how their character could claim alibis, so close reading is key if we want an ironclad case to finally get justice for their victims.\r\n\r\nAs you all know, engaging seniors in a digital age is a challenge, and this book is proving to be just the ticket as we wrap up our first semester. We recently had a full house for our 3 nights of concerts spanning from strings night, to classical wind night, to jazz. The kids worked so hard to put on a great performance, and enjoyed the supplies you helped provide to enhance their success!\r\nThank you for seeing that music is a universal language that transcends boundaries, and its power to transform lives is immeasurable. We've been using them to measure CO₂ levels during hands-on investigations—everything from studying plant photosynthesis to monitoring how human activity affects global warming. One memorable moment was when students compared CO₂ levels from plant chambers kept in light versus darkness; their excitement grew as the data revealed photosynthesis in action! Being able to see those numbers change in real time helped them connect abstract textbook ideas to real-world science.\r\n\r\nThese gas sensors provide students with the opportunity to use the same kind of technology professional scientists use in environmental research. Students immediately started brainstorming new experiments, from testing classroom CO₂ levels during different times of the day, to investigating the effects of decomposition in a compost pile. Their curiosity and confidence have grown so much because they now feel like true scientists collecting and analyzing their own data. Because of you, they are not only learning core science concepts—they're developing the skills and mindset of real environmental researchers. The moment the students saw the neatly packaged pellets and dissection tools, the room filled with interest and curiosity. These materials allowed for an authentic, inquiry-based science investigation. Each group carefully identified and sorted their findings, allowing us to analyze an owl's diet, and also calculate how many prey animals an owl typically consumes over the course of its lifetime, providing key insights into the forest ecosystem of our local park. Some students who are often quiet in class became animated scientists, debating whether a particular jawbone belonged to a vole or a shrew.\r\nThis project transformed our unit from textbook learning into true exploration. The owl pellets helped students visualize predator-prey relationships, energy flow, and ecosystem balance in a tangible way. Now, we're using what we learned from the dissections to build food web models and write ecosystem analysis reports that include real-world data from our investigations.
