I teach a class of highly-gifted sophomore English students. They are motivated and love to read challenging material, but often need a "push" to read works in translation. They are also very rule-compliant kids, and are sometimes afraid to explore works outside the literary canon.

My students have very "America-centric" educational experiences and viewpoints. It concerns me that their knowledge of world history and literature does not encompass much outside of "big" events, such as World War II. I am also very concerned that my school does not provide any tenth grade literature written by women. My students (both young men and women) have been rather vocal about this, and some feel alienated by the limited selections provided them. My students need to be exposed to the deeper study of books outside of the British Isles and America, and to quality literature by people of both genders.

I need 30 copies of the beautiful Catalan novel, The Time of the Doves, written by Merce Rodoreda. Catalan was the language of the Spanish empire until 1939, after the Spanish Civil War. At that time, Catalan books were burned and the language was forbidden everywhere but in private homes. I plan on the students reading this tender, uplifting, and historical novel as a follow-up to our the Holocaust novel, Night. The Time of the Doves chronicles one woman's growth from nearly complete submission, to empowerment and independence during a chaotic time in her country's history. I can enrich the study of this novel by also chronicling the author's life. She was exiled to France, and struggled to write for many years in the midst of the Spanish Civil, and then the World War.

Thanks to you, my students will be able to access one of the finest modern novels in translation. They will also enjoy one book written by a woman with a unique and very relevant perspective. My greatest goal is to give my students the best worldview that I can, and your help will go a long way in doing that.
