I teach a challenging and diverse group of 120 young adolescents at a public middle school. As a seventh grade language arts teacher, my curriculum includes preparing them for state mandated Writing Tests and Standardized Reading Tests. This year, their scores were phenomenal – a whopping 19% growth! I credit much of this to my use of a document camera this past school year. Alas, the document camera belongs to the school library, not to me, and as I return it for its next user, I am now hoping a generous donor will give the gift of this wonderful piece of technology to my classroom!

A document camera (also called visual presenter) is a device that allows you to magnify any document (teacher’s notes, student work, etc.) book (textbook, picture book) or 3-D demonstration and project it onto a large screen for the class. Gone are the days of the overhead machine with its black-and white, 2-D images and wasteful plastic transparency films!

The document camera is a wonderful vehicle for many educational goals, but I have found it especially crucial as an attention-getting, timely, simple way to hook this instant-feedback, computer-savvy generation of students into writing! Students are able to quickly display their piece of writing for the entire class to read, discuss, and edit. Middle school students are social creatures, and they love to listen to their peers’ writing and have their peers’ feedback on their own. Also, the document camera allows me to share student writing immediately, not wait for expensive transparency films to be made of only a few pieces of student writing, as with the old overhead machine. I can teach through editing and proofreading of student-volunteered pieces while we are “in the moment”.

Like the chalkboard for teachers long ago, I know the document camera would be the singularly most-powerful and frequently-used tool in my classroom. Your generous donation WILL make all the difference!
