As any English teacher, I am passionate about fostering a love of reading. These books? - truly transformed our independent reading time. My students lit up at the chance to read things like: New Kid, March, and Nimona. All of these books felt relevant to students, were more accessible, and highly visually engaging - which kept even the most distracted student engaged. \r\n\r\nI was able to watch reluctant readers consume page after page, often asking if they could borrow books to read at home. It sparked meaningful conversations, authentic book recommendations among peers, and even impromptu mini book clubs during lunch.\r\n\r\nI still remember the day I introduced the new graphic novels—students crowded around the shelf, some gasping at the cover art, others calling out, \"I've wanted to read this forever!\" One student who hadn't finished a book all year ended up reading three graphic novels that month alone. Their enthusiasm created a ripple effect in our classroom culture; books became something to look forward to, not something to dread.\r\n\r\nNow that I'm teaching high school, I still incorporate graphic novels into my classroom when I can. I often reflect on that foundational year and how powerful it was to see reading come alive for my students. That project helped lay the groundwork for how I approach literacy today—meeting students where they are, and honoring what they love. Thank you for being part of that.","fullyFundedDate":1689689724598,"projectUrl":"project/kates-classroom-during-cancer-treatment/7359555/","projectTitle":"Kate's Classroom during Cancer Treatments","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Puckett","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8260033_orig.jpg?crop=1358,1358,x341,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1683482434168","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8260033"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_93956","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":592,"numTeachers":60,"percentFrplEligible":38,"percentAsian":6,"percentBlack":13,"percentWhite":51,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":23,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"9.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":86.8,"schoolId":93956,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about East Cary Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"East Cary Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/wake-county-public-school-system/east-cary-middle-school/93956"}
