I teach first grade in a Title 1 school in an urban area. The majority of my students are English language learners. It's a wonderfully diverse school, with students from Bangladesh, China, Mexico, Pakistan, and several other countries. Many of the children are new arrivals to America.

The greatest thing about teaching first grade is that it's the year when children learn to read. Most of the children come to first grade in September with emergent or early reading skills. They progress so fast, it's incredible! By the end of the year, the majority of first graders are reading fluently and truly enjoying the magic of books.

Because reading is such a big part of the school day, the books in my classroom get worn out fast! The children read every day in school, as well as borrow books each week to take home. The books get torn, lose pages and covers, get dirty, and occasionally get lost in a child's home. As you can imagine, books in poor shape are not that appealing to young children. New books would engage my students and entice them to read. The books I am requesting are first grade favorites! I am requesting story books that the children can read on their own, as well as enjoy listening to during daily read aloud time. The books requested cover a range of reading levels, so all the children, beginning readers and strong readers, can enjoy the books independently.

Your generosity will help all the children who come through my classroom doors. New arrivals to the country will learn English faster and more meaningfully through the wonder of books. Stronger readers will be challenged. Weaker readers will be motivated. All the children will be engaged. A beautiful, well stocked library will also teach my students the value of caring for books and treating them gently. I'm excited for my new class already! They are going to have the best book collection ever!
