Recently, the library at my high school introduced a small number of manga titles, or Japanese comics, to the collection. Since then, an ever-growing stream of the most infamous of reluctant readers (teenage boys) have been pouring through the library doors, gathering around the tiny collection, chatting with each other over the plot lines and predicted outcomes, and recommending titles to one another. The excitement and interest surrounding these titles has spawned a new after-school club, The Anime Club; not to mention created a swarm of new library users.

Unfortunately, with school budgets tighter than ever, the allowance for purchasing popular titles is very grim. Our library relies almost entirely on donations and student fundraising to purchase popular fiction. Though it is still in its infancy, our manga section has circulated more than any other series or titles this year. As manga is not heavily carried in our public libraries, the school libraries have become a valued source of these materials for students. They have even begun requesting materials available at other schools in the county, through inter-library loan, a practice rarely seen in the school system though greatly encouraged.

The boys at my high school implore you, dear Donor, to provide them more manga titles. In fact, a few of them are currently on their knees in front of the computer, grinning and begging, as I type this! All the requested titles have been hand-selected by our student body, going through an elaborate and entertaining process of elimination as voters have marked off which series they most want next. These thirty-plus titles will offer months and months of reading pleasure as they are passed around between students. Perhaps you have never read manga, or have little experience with the new media from overseas. Let me assure you, it offers much more than the comic books of olden days. These books are filled with complex plots, serious social issues, and ambitiously imaginative characters. The titles highlight values such as the power of friendship or the importance of family, as well as traits such as honor, courage, humility and dedication.

And let us not forget the fringe benefits of drawing our reluctant readers into the library! Since adding the manga section, we have also had increased circulation throughout all sections. Our students are picking up other books while they're here... books on foreign cultures, cookbooks, poetry, biographies - just to name a few! Not to mention they are also reading traditional print fiction along side the manga. Dear donor, with your donation you are encouraging a life-long love affair with books, humanity's gateway to all stored knowledge. And some very eager teenagers are all hoping you will decide to share with them the gift of reading.
