My students are first graders in an underprivileged area of our city in Illinois. They are full of excitement to do well and to succeed. Our school has high expectations and high accountability which helps us strive to produce high results!

My students seem to thrive on technology. They are captivated and motivated by it. They love to log on to the computer to play educational games focusing on the topics we are learning about. Unfortunately, we only have 4 computers in our classroom and no computer lab in our school. My students love to write. Right now, we are working especially hard on learning to construct sentences correctly. We often do centers in our classroom (which my students absolutely love), but we need a better way for students to practice constructing proper sentences more independently that is engaging and gives them immediate feedback.

We need 6 LeapFrog "Tag Funny Phrases" to accomplish this. In this program, students choose from pieces that have words on them. The words are color-coded and need to be placed in the matching color space to create a silly sentence. Students can then check their newly created sentence using the system to help them electronically read the sentence. Since the words are color-coded (to show what type of word it is -- i.e. noun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc.) students who are ready for the next step could learn about the different parts of speech.

This project will not only tremendously benefit my students who are significantly behind academically, it will also allow high-performing students to move on to new, more challenging material instead of being held back. These materials would be able to be used weekly during our language arts centers time, which usually amount to about 4-5 hours a week. LeapFrog "Tag Funny Phrases" would have a huge impact on my students' learning!
