Nature can seem a million miles away in the midst of the city. I teach elementary art at a public school in an urban city. I feel fortunate to be part of a school that is sincerely dedicated to the success of its students, however more often than not there isn't enough funding to support this dedication.

No matter how beautiful our city, it is alarming how many students have not traveled far beyond its boundaries. It is very difficult when I try to introduce the theme of environmental art and how this art form advocates for the protection of the Earth. How can students visualize something they have never seen.

Students will begin to be able to visualize nature outside the city. This spring the 4th Grade class will be going on a field trip to view work by the environmental artists Maya Lin and Andy Goldsworthy. I am requesting resources (30 reusable drawing boards, recycled paper and sketching pencils) for students to document the exhibit.
