The pieces include rugs, steps, a rocking chair and a balance board. The children are enjoying all of these items every day in the classroom! \r\n\r\nThe gross motor pieces see the most use in our first period of the day, morning work. After the children have breakfast, they are able to choose different areas of the classroom for their morning work before gathering for Morning Meeting. Almost all of the children choose the gross motor station at some point during morning work each day! \r\n\r\nThe children particularly enjoy practicing the stairs, which help them learn how to go up the steps alternating one foot at a time - a critical gross motor skill for 3 year old children. The balance board is also a favorite during this time. Some children use the nearby shelf to steady themselves and some have gained the balance to use the board without the support. The rocking chair provides a great sensory experience for many of the children throughout the day as they develop their vestibular sense. The rocking chair is also a helpful seating option for some of our sensory seeking children during our large group learning opportunities during Morning Meeting and Read Aloud.
