Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Gorgeous illustrations. Moving characters we can relate to. Historical context. Texts that are challenging but within our reach. Shouldn't all students have access to books like this? My 6th graders who are English as a Second Language learners come to our school from all around the globe. We were very fortunate to receive a selection of great graphic novels for our classroom library recently through Donors Choose and generous individuals like you. Among the books were five copies of "The Invention of Hugo Cabret", a new, fascinating Caldecott Medal winner that is unlike any book we have ever seen! Part historical fiction (it takes place in Paris in 1931), part mystery, and part graphic novel, it was a huge hit with a small group of 7 ESL students I work with. The book captured their imaginations, and I spent the best month and a half of my teaching career watching their intent faces as they dove in. We learned reading comprehension strategies, studied Surrealism, and learned about the early silent film director Georges Melies, who makes an appearance in the story. What a blast! I would love to share this unit with my larger ESL classes. I have obtained three more copies of the book using my own funds, so we now have a total of 8. Unfortunately, purchasing 20 more copies of a new hardcover novel would break the bank! Can you help me get enough copies of this fabulous text so that I can share it with my other students? It is the centerpiece of the in-depth reading comprehension unit I created that also explores history, art, and silent film. Thank you in advance for your kind generosity.
