This project expired on February 14, 2009.

I teach at a low socioeconomic Title 1 school. This year all my students are on free lunch status and several receive a school provided feed the hungry children after school food program. This high need population consists mainly of hard working single parent families that are trying to make ends meet. Some are unable to feed their children and do not have enough money for their children to receive reading support. Children left to their own choices in the library will read fictional literature and therefore have a difficult time with non-fictional text, even if they are interested in the content.

Having not been instructed on how to read non-fictional components successfully they often shy away from reading the more difficult, but essential text. Non-fictional text is the language of instructions and directions in the work force. To be successful in life they need to learn how to process and comprehend non-fictional reading materials. Students often are interested in these texts but then shy away, because they fear they can't do it or they are lacking the skills to decode the text.

By having strategic materials that will teach them how to not only decode and read a passage but how to successfully read and comprehend non-fictional text we help these children to learn not just for the test, but for life. They will be able to follow written directions and be successful at any task that was given to them. Most importantly, they will become able to research, read and fulfill any task given to them, because they can read non-fictional materials.

Your support of this project will not only help me teach them the difficult strategies to read, decode and comprehend the nonfiction text for varied lessons and grades, but you will support their ability to perform from here on out. They will be able to be successful, not only in 4th grade, but they will have the skills to join the work force and follow the directions on how to be productive in society. This will help my students to be the best they can be, and to break the circle of their environment to be successful. You will help them to achieve a lifelong goal by helping them now to learn how to read non-fictional text and all it's components.
