Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Reading is the key that opens a child's mind and expands his/her knowledge. I am the Media Specialist in a small school located in upstate South Carolina. This school has Title I status and a high minority population. Part B of this project will impact every student in 3rd through 5th grade because each student will be encouraged to read the books and share the books with family and friends. Student participation will be tracked and students will be rewarded based on the number of books read. The rewards will include participation in the state wide banner contest for reading 2 of the nominated books, participation in the SC Book Award Celebration and voting process for reading a minimum of 5 books, and a special lunch and free books for the students that read all 20 books. Other activities that will be utilized include student book reviews published as podcasts and student generated advertisements for the books using MovieMaker. The use of technology will allow students to explore the various forms of media used in today's world and will teach students the importance of evaluating advertisements as well as personal opinions versus fact. The books for this promotion are selected by the SC Book Award Committee. After reading a minimum of 5 books, students will be "registered to vote" for their favorite book at a SC Book Award Celebration to be held at the school in February. This celebration will include snacks and book discussions as well as a time for students to exercise their right to vote. The need for books and reading promotions in this school and its surrounding community is serious with the school wide reading proficiency at 43.7%. Therefore my goal is to use a voting theme in conjunction with the national election along with this reading promotion to encourage students to read and exercise their right to vote. Your help will ensure that my students are encouraged to read and experience the voting process including registering to vote and voicing opinions about their favorite books. Your support will assist my students in gaining a broader understanding of the election process as they participate in the statewide vote and and see the impact of their vote at the state level. By participating in the statewide voting process, students learn the importance of becoming an active participant in the political process and realize the importance of being a responsible citizen in the future. In order to participate in this statewide reading/voting process, the media center needs 1 or 2 copies of each book on the SC Book Award Nominee list, from "Archer's Quest" to "Winners Walk", and 2 tabletop display racks that will be used to display and promote the books.
