My students were bursting with joy and pride of the textured ceramic hanging they made to take home to their families. Especially during the giving season, it was heartwarming to hear my students share their plan to give their art away as a gift.\r\n\r\nMy students learned so much from this lesson. They have very basic to no prior knowledge of clay making. With our simple but hearty lesson, they had the freedom to explore new materials such as impressing tools, dragging tools, and other clay tools, and processes of creating a varied surface quality on a piece of clay by adding visible or tactile patterns to enhance their skills and knowledge, while also making several of their own one of a kind pieces.\r\n\r\nGlazing was mostly new to them. Because of their experience glazing their own piece, they now understand the difference between paint and glaze and why to choose one over the other. They now understand the importance of multiple coats, painting in the textured cracks (or not), and not painting the bottom. \r\n\r\nMy next lesson will build from this one. They are ready and eager for hand built quilted bowls that they will use multiple glazes on. We are all so very thankful for your generous donation and your support for public education and visual arts.","fullyFundedDate":1731690240731,"projectUrl":"project/from-earthy-clay-to-shiny-display-glaze/8933177/","projectTitle":"From Earthy Clay to Shiny Display: Glaze Needed for Art!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Singleton","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3137529_orig.jpg?crop=301,301,x95,y326&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1731258459099","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/c-singleton-art"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_6143","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":323,"numTeachers":27,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":18,"percentWhite":24,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":53,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"12.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":52.3,"schoolId":6143,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Westcliffe Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Westcliffe Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/south-carolina/greenville-county-schools/westcliffe-elementary-school/6143"}
