Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach English/Language Arts to seventh grade students in Boston. Over 85% of our student population come from low income homes.

Students have the opportunity of studying an author who looks like them. Being an African American teacher myself, I feel it is important for them to see that there are role models who can inspire them with their writing.

We have already read The Skin I'm In as a class. I hope to read other books by this author in book clubs. I would like my students to complete this author study/novel study in small groups and come to a common understanding that all of life's experiences can help motivate writing.

With your help, my students will be able to analyze different novels for character identification, moral, conflict etc... Please help my students to see that reading what they enjoy helps them to write enjoyably!
