My Students

A typical day in my Biology Honors classroom consists of a warm-up, some guided notes or an inquiry-based activity, and some form of assessment. By the end of the school year, I would like my students to have mastered all course-related content, but we need your help with supplies in order to do so!

My students are in a Title 1 school with more than half on free or reduced lunches.

They are multi-cultural and very diverse learners such as ELL, Visual, Hands-On, etc. (inclusion takes place). Students come from all backgrounds and are eager to learn. These students want to fit in and want to contribute to their own educational learning process in order to achieve understanding of content and be able to enter the global world. Most work well with others during small group collaborations. Through inquiry-based activities both inside and outside the classroom, students are gaining the necessary survival skills for today's economy.

My Project

My students will be implementing an inquiry-based activity entitled "The Effect of Concentration on the Rate of Diffusion." They will be utilizing the tubing and clamps, as well as various concentrations of the sucrose solution in order to gain a better understanding of how osmosis works. They will apply what they have learned by completing a formal laboratory report and sharing their findings with their peers. They will collaborate with one another and figure out how osmosis works in their every day lives.

My students come from diverse backgrounds.

By performing an inquiry-based activity instead of a guided activity, students will be able to gain a better understanding of how osmosis works. They will be able to understand the difference between hypotonic, hypertonic, and isotonic solutions. Instead of just doing worksheets, students will be able to see it in action by designing their own experiments. This will change students' lives for the better due to first hand experience!
